How does it work?
The AsthmaCare UK programme of breathing re-training does not involve using further drugs than you are already taking. It consists of a series of Buteyko breathing exercises and monitoring the improvement, specially selected pranayama yoga exercises and a Mindfulness Breathing technique. If you are asthmatic, you will also receive asthma education and advice on the management of asthma if anxious of suffering Panic Attacks or Sleep Apnoea the appropriate advice will be given to help you improve these specific conditions. The Workshop teaches you breathing techniques and strategies which overcome the harmful effects of "hidden hyperventilation", and to optimising the breathing. The aim is to return breathing patterns to that of a normal healthy person. Normalising the breathing pattern in this way has been clinically proven to result in a decline in symptoms and need for medication.
Outcomes
- Significant reduction in/or or elimination of, asthma reliever and preventer medications (the reduction in preventer medication is done in consultation with the client's medical practitioner)
- Significant reduction in/or elimination of, asthma symptoms and attacks
- Decreased reliance on/or elimination of, sleep apnoea appliances such as CPAP machines and mandibular advancement splints. This is done in consultation with the client's medical practitioner and/or specialist.
- Symptomatic relief of other respiratory disorders such as emphysema, bronchiectasis and COPD

Who does the Buteyko Method Help?
Buiteyko is suitable for children from 4 years of age and adults of any age. It is effective for people with all types and degrees of severity of asthma, as well as people with other respiratory disorders such as emphysema, bronchiectasis, sinusitis, snoring and sleep apnoea, anxiety and panic attacks. It is also effective in reducing chronic fatigue. The Method is most effective for those people who are prepared to take time and responsibility for controlling their asthma. It works for those who are and remain willing and motivated to practise the exercises and strategies they learn in a course.

Every year many people with ASTHMA and breathing-related conditions suffer respiratory infections, sore throats, physical incapacity, fatigue, time off work or school with a poor quality of life, ongoing financial expense and a deteriorating condition. How do you learn the Buteyko Method?
The AsthmaCare Workshop consists of four/five teaching sessions of about 2 hours, plus telephone or email follow-up as required. Clients learn how to retrain their breathing to enable them to breathe correctly when sleeping, exercising, speaking, eating, and performing all daily activities. Improvement generally commences within the first 24 hours.
What do you learn in an AsthmaCareUK Workshop?
On this breathing retraining course you learn specific exercises/strategies to normalise your breathing to reduce symptoms of asthma, hayfever, sleep disorders,etc.. Your individually tailored programme will give you an improved quality of life from Day 1. Practised regularly, with commitment, what you learn here will produce improvements in every area of life.
Session 1 - one-to-one
· by telephone prior to the course, following receipt of your Registration form and deposit
· individual assessment and brief overview of the Buteyko Method
· check your health using the breath-hold exercise (Control Pause)
· the importance of, and how to maintain, 24 hour nasal breathing, even during sleep!.
Session 2 - Friday 6.30 – 8 pm
· Introduction to Dr Buteyko’s Method, use & development - the clinical trials and benefits.
· you set personal goals and receive a workbook to record your results to monitor progress
· observe your breathing pattern and the effect on the breathing of correct posture
· learn and practise a special mind/body continuum relaxation technique
· overview of medication and how to use minimum for maximum effect.
· learn and practise the relaxation, Control Pause, and Small Breathholds exercises.
Session 3 – Saturday 11.00 am – 1.00 pm
· practice and refinement of yesterdays exercises
· learn the Reduced Breathing and Extended Pause exercises
· what is stress? - how to recognise it - the ‘fight or flight’ response - how stress creates CHVS.
· the difference between normal breathing and Chronic Hidden Hyperventilation, disorders CHVS produces - how Buteyko reduces your symptoms
· recognising early signs of an asthma or HV attack, the difference, how to overcome attacks
Session 4 – Saturday 2.00 – 4.00 pm
· feedback – we check your results to make sure you are practising correctly.
· learn the Steps exercise then - putting it all together -
· the effects of food, drink, and triggers such as allergens and stressful events on the body. What to avoid and how to manage your response.
· how to recognise possible clearing symptoms and managing ‘flu, chest infections,etc.
· changing lifestyle habits to improve your health.
Session 5 - Sunday 11.00 am – 1.00 pm
· feedback - looking at your results so far - Q & A session
· further practice and personalisation of the core exercises
· how to integrate Buteyko into daily life: socialising, eating out, work, school, etc.
· exploration of physical exercise options – how to speak proper! the Buteyko way.
· we summarise the course and you receive a personalised future programme
· arrangements are made for follow-up.
Follow-up programme – OPTIONAL but strongly recommended!
As long-term sufferers (now recovered!) from breathing disorders, your practitioners understand the importance of follow-up, support and encouragement on the road to recovery. We commit to giving you as much personal attention as you need to help you achieve your personal health goals. You are encouraged to book in for at least one session of a future course to review and consolidate your progress.
